You’ve spent hours and possibly thousands of dollars restoring and maintaining a classic car. From specialty parts to new paint, classic car owners take pride in their rides. So why wouldn’t you take just as much care in choosing your insurance?

Some drivers new to classic cars assume regular car insurance will cover their car. What they don’t realize is that standard types of insurance don’t cover custom parts. #1 - American Modern

With a wide array of covered vehicles, impressive spare parts coverage, and few limitations, American Modern Insurance Group (AMIG) is the top choice for classic car insurance. From antique tractors to vintage motorcycles and collector cars, the company insures just about every classic category and has features we think any customer would love.

Standout Features

  • Flexible usage. Choose mileage plans from 1,000, 3,000, and 6,000—or go unlimited. The broad usage allowed by AMIG is impressive.
  • Spare parts coverage. Boasting the highest amount of spare parts coverage we found—at $2,000—AMIG is the best at protecting those unique classic parts.
  • Inflation Guard. An automatic 2 percent per quarter increase is included with your American Modern policy in the event of a total covered loss.

More Coverage Features

  • Discounts. Save money on your premium by taking advantage of discounts, including for anti-theft devices, car club memberships, and collections valued more than $150,000.
  • Emergency services. Coverage includes reimbursements of $75 for towing and $150 per day trip interruption. You can also purchase additional roadside assistance for flat tires, lockouts, and more.
  • Few limitations. AMIG covers more types of vehicles than most insurance companies and has no minimum driver age limit.
  • Pet coverage. Protect your pup with $750 for medical expenses in case your pet is injured while in your classic car.
  • Wide deductible options. Choose among a range of deductible options, from $0 to $10,000.
  • Auto show reimbursement. AMIG reimburses up to $5,000 per person for medical payments.
  • Trip interruption. Get Up to $600 reimbursement for collision or breakdowns.

#2 - Hagerty

Hagerty is another major player in the classic car insurance market, and it deserves high marks. This company offers notable features like a vehicle valuation tool, coverage for vehicles undergoing restoration, and practically zero mileage restrictions. In other words, drive collector cars as much as you want to show it off. You don’t have to keep your car in a locked garage all the time to protect it.

Standout Features:

  • Valuation tool. Hagerty’s impressive “Valuation Tool” helps you define your classic vehicle’s value before you apply. Choose your vehicle’s make, model, year, and body style, and get a full value report—including a personalized estimated policy premium.
  • Under restoration coverage. If you’re currently restoring your ride, Hagerty gives you an automatic 10 percent increase (up to $25,000) and $750 coverage for tools. This coverage goes for as low as $20 per year.
  • No mileage restrictions. As long as you don’t use your classic as your daily-use vehicle, you can drive as much as your heart desires.

More Coverage Details:

  • Auto show reimbursement. If you’re injured while traveling to or from an auto show, Hagerty will pay up to $10,000 in medical payments.
  • Spare parts. In the event of an accident or theft, you get $750 for parts and an additional $250 for personal effects that are damaged or lost.
  • Hagerty Plus® roadside assistance. For as low as $35 added to your premium, get 24/7 assistance with guaranteed flatbed towing.
  • Motorcycle safety equipment. For owners of two-wheeled classics, Hagerty includes up to $1,000 coverage for pants, gloves, jackets, and helmets.
  • Long list of covered vehicles. From antique tractors to decommissioned military vehicles, Hagerty covers just about every type of vehicle. The notable exception: build-your-own kit cars.

#3 - Grundy

Licensed in all 50 states, Grundy’s “Worldwide Collector Vehicle” program has been nationally recognized for its niche insurance offerings. Grundy Insurance is part of Philadelphia Insurance Companies and offers some impressive features like no mileage or model year restrictions and high liability limits. It’s a great option for the daily driver regardless of which state you live in.

Standout Features:

  • Availability. Grundy is for all Americans—it offers coverage in all 50 states.
  • No restrictions on vehicle age. While many companies have model year limitations, Grundy will insure vehicles of any age.
  • No mileage limitations. As long as you’re using the vehicle for hobby and pleasure, and not your daily car, you can drive it as much as you’d like.

More Coverage Details:

  • Inflation Guard. You get an automatic 4 percent increase each year that applies if your vehicle is totaled.
  • Auto show reimbursement. Grundy provides $5,000 per person for medical payments in the case of a total loss while traveling to or from an auto show.
  • Spare parts. At no extra cost, get up to $500 coverage for spare parts.
  • Emergency towing. Up to $250 coverage is included with every Grundy policy.
  • High liability limits. If you need coverage to protect yourself from liability events, Grundy allows you to purchase up to $1 million.
  • Trip interruption. You’ll get up to $600 reimbursement for collision or breakdowns.

#4 - American Collectors

Not to be confused with American Modern, American Collectors Insurance is another solid choice for classic cars. It combines feature-rich coverage with a robust emergency services program to keep your unique ride protected on and off the road.

Standout Features:

  • Emergency services. Packaged together are emergency towing, roadside assistance, theft rewards, and more in an unmatched program called the TLC Plan. It also covers lockouts, lost key return, emergency travel expenses, personal effects, theft and hit-and-run rewards, and legal defense benefits.
  • Vehicles in restoration. Not every insurer offers it, but American Collectors will insure your car throughout its restoration.
  • Vehicle-specific plans and discounts. American Collectors knows classic cars, and the company offers specific discounts and coverage options for the many types of vehicles it covers. Check its plan website for the rundown, from collectibles to custom rods.

More Coverage Details:

  • Broad coverage. Coverage from American Collectors doesn’t just include the road. You’re also protected in case of fire, flood, theft, or earthquakes.
  • Inflation guard. Classic car policies get a quarterly 2 percent increase up to 8 percent per year.
  • Discounts. Save money with modified vehicles worth more than $40,000, collections over $250,000, multi-vehicle policies, and more discount opportunities.
  • Mileage plans. You get three choices: 2,500, 5,000, or 7,500.
  • Spare parts. American Collectors includes coverage for up to $500 in spare parts, and you can purchase even more.

#5 - Safeco

Safeco’s a big name in the traditional car insurance market along with industry giants like Liberty Mutual. It will also insure certain classic and collectible vehicles. Although we think you’re usually better off going with one of the companies that specialize in classic cars like those above, if you drive your car for regular or daily use, Safeco is your best bet. It offers personal injury protection, collision coverage, and more. Rates are determined by factors like your credit score and if you have a clean driving record.

Standout Features:

  • Regular use. We think Safeco is the best bet if you drive your vehicle a lot–as in 7,500 miles or more per year–because it offers coverage for regular use.
  • Bundling. Another benefit of going with Safeco is that you can bundle your classic car coverage with other Safeco policies, like auto and home insurance.

Which Insurance Company Is Right for Your Classic Car?

Before making any final decisions on your insurance company, it is important to learn as much as you can about your local insurance providers, and the coverages they offer. If you plan to drive on a regular basis, you need to look at property damage and bodily injury liability.

Classic car insurance coverage is much more diverse than traditional insurance. It has to cover specialty parts and different driver types. Call your local insurance agent to clear up any questions that you might have. Questions to consider asking include, “What is the best coverage plan for me/my family/my situation?” “What are the minimum coverage requirements in my state and what form of coverage do you recommend?” “Do you guys offer any bundle discounts if I take out both my auto insurance and home insurance with you?” and “What is the average rate of insurance quotes you guys offer?”
